Our Story
Founded in 1783, the Academy of Richmond County is the oldest continually operating high school in the southeast. In 1791, President George Washington traveled to Augusta and delivered the school’s commencement address. It is the flagship school in a large Title I public school district, serving a diverse population, and neighboring Fort Gordon. Integrated into the school is the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB), a county wide magnet program. ARC is the only school in the Central Savannah River Area that hosts both the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and the IB Career-Related Programme (CP).
Hall of Fame alumni include people such as Dr. Hervey Cleckley, Coach Pat Dye, Col. Angela Grubbs, Supreme Court Justice Joseph Lamar, General James Longstreet, Tenor Timothy Miller, Maj. General Reginald Neal, Gov. Carl Sanders, Dr. Bennie Ward, Coach Ken Whisenhunt, and CNN anchor Judy Woodruff.
Programs of study include: IB Diploma Programme (DP), IB Career-related Programme, honors college preparatory, and college preparatory. Numerous Advanced Placement courses are available on site or through Georgia Virtual School. In addition, ARC hosts college dual-enrollment classes on campus as well as supporting students attending college courses on local college campuses.

Class Rank & Grade Point Average
An official class rank is compiled for each cohort at the end of the year. Averages are carried out to three decimal places and final averages are not rounded. Student’s grade point average (GPA) is based on quality points. Regular high school courses are on a 4.0 scale and Ad vanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Col lege/University courses are on a 5.0 scale awarded for each grade earned. High school student transcripts in clude the GPA, class rank, and numerical average.
